My first concert as a DMA student was last Wednesday, Oct. 2nd at 8:00 p.m. in the Center for the Arts at George Mason. The concert was in conjunction with the Symphonic Band and various other chamber ensembles at the School of Music. For all the freshman flutists, this was their first time on the CFA stage, and for Samantha Clarke and myself, our first time conducting as DMA students. We began the program with Flutes of Nature, Mvt. I - A Boy and His Tiger, by Jonathan Cohen, for which I played the piccolo. This piece was a great opener, as it had a funky upbeat dance groove, and ended with a clever grace note C to high F by the piccolo, producing an audible chuckle from the audience, as if to say, "The End." Next was Oblivion, by Astor Piazzola, a lyrical, saucy Latin piece, one of my absolute favorites to perform. Lynda Warren Clark and I played second flute together, with a beautifully blended sound and fantastic intonation in several exposed solo parts. The final piece was Tambourin, a standard repertoire piece by Francois Gossec, arranged for Two Solo Flutists with Flute Choir accompaniment by Ervin Monroe. Jeongwon Bae and Lori Lee were the soloists, with myself conducting an energetic, festive rendition. Tambourin was a perfect way to end our part of the concert. So proud to be a part of the GMU flute studio!
